"Two people were killed Friday night when an SUV slammed into a car before overturning and landing in a fountain outside a resort on St. Pete Beach.
The crash happened at about 8:45 p.m. in front of the Alden Beach Resort, 5900 Gulf Blvd., said Robert Weil, a traffic homicide investigator with the St. Pete Beach Police Department.
The two people in the car were dead at the scene, Weil said. They were identified as (Name) 32, of Tampa, and (Name) 33, of the Chicago area, St. Pete Beach police said.
The driver of the SUV, identified as (Name), of Gulfport, was taken to Bayfront Medical Center in serious condition, he said.
Witnesses said a motorcycle officer with lights flashing was behind the SUV when the crash happened. Police said the officer just had turned on his lights and was not chasing the SUV when the wreck occurred.
Police, rescuers and on-lookers moved among flashing emergency lights in the aftermath of the dramatic crash; an eerie Friday night spectacle on the normally sedate strip of beach road lined with hotels, fast-food restaurants and meandering tourists."
