Head-On Crash on Lancaster Injures Three People.

Date: 01/04/2012
Time: Around 3:40 P.M.
Location: Salem, Oregon
Vehicle(s) Involved: Saturn SL1, Mercury Sable, Subaru(no picture)

By Salem-News

"Salem, Oregon – A 3-car, head-on crash resulted in three people seeking treatment for injuries Wednesday afternoon.

Deputies Matt Hingston, Dave Wagner and Skip Lumley arrived at the intersection of Lancaster Drive SE and Munkers Street SE, minutes after receiving the 3:45pm call. Marion County Fire District and medics were also dispatched to assist with the injured parties.
The preliminary investigation indicates that a 2005 Subaru was traveling northbound on Lancaster in the right hand lane. At the intersection of Munkers, the driver pulled into the left lane but side-swiped a 1996 Saturn that was also traveling northbound on Lancaster Drive. The Saturn was pushed into the southbound lanes of Lancaster Drive and crashed head-on into a 2002 Mercury. A small engine fire erupted in the Mercury but it was quickly extinguished. It was raining and the roadway was wet at the time of the crash, but weather does not appear to be a factor in this crash.
The driver of the Subaru, Viktor Paplinskiy, 40, of Salem, stated he didn’t see the Saturn as he started his lane change. He was not aware of his speed at the time of the crash. Paplinskiy was uninjured. There were no passengers in his vehicle.
The driver of the Saturn is identified as Alexandra Taylor, 20, of Salem. She received minor facial injuries and transported herself to Salem Hospital for treatment. She told deputies she was traveling about 30 mph when her car was struck on the right side by the Subaru.
The driver of the Mercury is identified as Charles Dyram, 84, of Silverton. He was treated by Medics at the scene and then transported to the Salem Hospital for treatment. The extent of his injuries is unknown and consistent with HIPAA regulations; no further reports on his condition will be issued. Dyram said he was traveling at 30-35mph just before the crash and was unable to avoid the Saturn.
His wife was a passenger in his vehicle. She is identified as Shirley Dyram, 82. She was also treated at the scene and transported to Salem Hospital for further treatment. Consistent with HIPAA regulations; no further reports on her condition will be issued.
Deputy Hingston noted. “The injuries in this crash could have been worse. The drivers and passenger were wearing seatbelts and the airbags in the Saturn and Mercury clearly minimized the impact to Ms. Taylor and the Dyrams”.
