"A Toronto cop was seriously injured when he apparently lost control of his cruiser while racing to a crime scene and smashed into a car in East York this morning.
Witnesses say the officer, who may have been responding to a robbery, was southbound on Dawes Rd. near Victoria Park Ave. at a high rate of speed with lights flashing and sirens blaring when he crashed around 9:30 a.m.
Dinesh Rathasingam, 22, was driving home with friends after spending the night at a Tamil vigil downtown when the cruiser flew by his car.
He watched in his rearview mirror as the police vehicle slid sideways and slammed into a Toyota Corolla parked at the side of the road.
"I was almost in tears, I was so freaking out for his life," said Rathasingam, after he and his pals ran to the officer's aid and called 911.
One of the others in Rathasingam's car described it as "a massive hit."
"I'm still shaking," Gowrishangar Kamalanathan, 24, said.
He and others said the officer was out cold and bleeding badly from a head injury, but he seemed to regain consciousness before being whisked away by ambulance to the trauma centre at Sunnybrook hospital.
A 76-year-old man who was in the parked Corolla was taken to Sunnybrook hospital.
Toronto Police said the province's special investigations unit, which probes all incidents of serious injury or death involving police, was contacted and may invoke their mandate.

Dad, daughter killed by suspected drunk driver.

"A father and daughter were killed overnight in a head-on collision with a driver heading the wrong way on the eastbound QEW ramp to northbound Hwy 427.

A woman in the car, believed to be the mother of the dead teen, was taken to Sunnybrook Hospital with life-threatening injuries. Police say the family was out celebrating the woman’s 50th birthday.
Police arrested a 19-year-old driver of a second vehicle at the scene under the suspicion that he was driving under the influence. He was taken to St. Michael’s Hospital with serious injuries.
The crash happened at around 2:50 a.m., according to a news release put out by Ontario Provincial Police.
The teen was driving a GMC Envoy at the time it crashed with a Dodge Caravan, killing the 49-year-old driver and a 16-year-old young woman. Both victims were pronounced dead at the scene.
The names of the victims will not be released until their families are notified."

Car flips in crash.

"Several people have been sent to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries following a two-vehicle crash on Notre Dame Avenue, according to Greater Sudbury Police Service.

That's all the information that is currently known, a police spokesperson said. The collision is under investigation.

According to witnesses, the crash happened around 3 p.m. at the intersection of Notre Dame and Leslie Street. The collision involved a black Chevrolet Cavalier and a tan-coloured Chevrolet Impala.

As a result of the collision, the Impala flipped over and came to rest in the parking lot of the Prestige Apartments, while the Cavalier crashed into the the traffic-light pole.

Residents in the area said the intersection is known for being dangerous, and too many vehicles run red lights. As pedestrians, they are always on the lookout for dangerous situations.

A handicap parking permit could be seen in lying inside the Impala, while a wheelchair was removed from the Cavalier."

"A Roman Catholic priest from Estevan has died in hospital after the car he was driving was hit by a train.

RCMP have identified the victim as 43-year-old (censored).
Emergency crews responded to the collision in the community of Macoun, about 30 kilometres northwest of Estevan, Sunday morning.
The driver of the vehicle was taken to hospital in Weyburn and was later transported by STARS air ambulance to Regina, where he died from his injuries Thursday morning.
Mounties say the railroad crossing was marked with signs and the lights and whistles on the train were working at this time of the collision.
The crash remains under investigation, but police say no charges are expected."

Train-van crash in Lakeshore kills 2 children, injures 3.

"Two children have died following a crash involving a CP freight train and a Dodge minivan in Lakeshore Sunday morning.
Ontario Provincial Police report six-year-old (Censored) and her sister (Censored), 3, were killed when the minivan they were riding in collided with a train on Strong Road, just north of County Road 42.
Their brother, (Censored), 4, sustained serious life-threatening injuries and was transferred to a hospital in Detroit to receive medical treatment.
Their father, Andrew Wil-liams, who was driving the van, also sustained serious life-threatening injuries and is in a Windsor hospital with the youngest passenger, one-year-old Jasmyn Williams, who received minor injuries in the crash.
OPP said the family from Lakeshore was heading south on Strong Road just before 10 a.m. Sunday when it collided with the train that was heading west.
Nobody on the train was injured, police said.
OPP Technical Collision Investigators are continuing to look into the matter, along with Canadian Pacific Police, to determine the cause of the accident.
As police investigated the scene, the mangled van sat about 10 metres west of the intersection where the collision took place.
Due to the immense damage as a result of the collision, the van was almost unrecognizable and it was difficult to make out exactly what kind of vehicle it was.
The intersection has no lights or gates to warn motorists of an oncoming train, but rather an X symbolizing the crossing and a bright yellow sign warning motorists to be prepared to stop.
Strong Road in Lakeshore has been reopened.

Fatal highway crash leads to drunk driving charges.

"A man is facing charges of impaired driving causing death in a crash that closed part of the Trans-Canada Highway east of Winnipeg on Friday.

The collision happened at about 6 a.m. on the Trans-Canada between highways 206 and 207, near the town of Ste. Anne.

According to RCMP spokesman Cpl. Miles Hiebert, a Chevy Blazer was rear-ended by a Ford Explorer. The impact was so hard the Blazer was sent flying, end over end.
Both vehicles ended up in the ditch with the Blazer being torn apart in the process and left almost unrecognizable, standing on its nose in the grass.
The 22-year-old driver of that vehicle was ejected during the rollover and died. The name of the man, from the Rural Municipality of Ste. Anne, is not being made public, RCMP said.
The 26-year-old driver of the other vehicle is in hospital. That man, also from the RM of Ste. Anne, is facing the drunk driving charges and is scheduled to appear in Winnipeg provincial court on Aug. 17.
The westbound lanes of the Trans-Canada in that area were closed to traffic until just before noon."

"EDMONTON - Speed is believed to have been a factor in a crash that killed a 31-year-old man on Anthony Henday Drive early Friday.
The man’s Chrysler Intrepid was nearly obliterated in the crash, its entire engine coming to rest in the ditch nearby.
No other vehicles were involved, and there were no passengers in the man’s car. The accident was called in to police at about 2:40 a.m. by motorists who came across the crash scene. Police say the actual time of the collision hasn’t yet been determined.
The man had been headed eastbound on the Henday when he hit the pole, about 500 metres west of the turnoff to Manning Drive.
From tire tracks, it appears the man may have been driving in the ditch for a short distance before the impact. He died at the scene.
A large section of the Henday was closed for most of the morning, as police collision analysts worked at the scene.
Police say speed is believed to have been a factor, but there is no indication alcohol was involved."

"CALGARY - A young boy was killed in a two-vehicle crash and a man from Calgary is dead following a fiery wreck after two separate collisions outside city limits Tuesday afternoon.
The collision east of Calgary that killed the boy and sent two young children to hospital with critical injuries was a “tough scene” to witness, emergency responders said.
Belongings, a child’s car seat and vehicle debris were strewn across the Trans-Canada Highway. A girl was ejected from the vehicle.
All three children are between five and eight years old.
Four people in total sustained “massive, traumatic injuries,” according to EMS.
Paramedics arrived at Highway 1 and Paradise Road east of Calgary shortly after 4 p.m. following reports of a crash between a small four-door car carrying two women and three children and a utility van driven by a lone male, said an EMS spokesman, Adam Loria.
RCMP say the van was heading east on Highway 1 and the car northbound on Paradise Road when it entered the intersection and was struck.
The boy was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics, Loria said.
A girl, who was ejected from a rear seat, was flown by STARS air ambulance to Alberta Children’s Hospital in critical condition.
Another boy, who was also in critical condition, and the two women who sustained serious and potentially life-threatening injuries, were taken to hospitals in Calgary by ground ambulances.
Loria said he didn’t have details on the ages of the injured women or whether the five occupants were related.
The driver of the van was not hurt but shaken up and assessed by paramedics at the scene.
Eastbound Highway 1 heading was closed, and reduced to one lane westbound for several hours following the collision so RCMP could investigate.
Loria said EMS will determine whether attending crews need debriefing or time off to cope after responding to the scene.
“We do have young ones at home or families of our own,” he said.
Airdrie RCMP and EMS were also busy responding to a fatal crash northwest of Calgary, which closed Highway 567, one kilometre west of Symons Valley Road.
RCMP say just after 3:30 p.m., an eastbound car veered into the westbound lanes along Highway 567, colliding head on with a westbound semi truck.
The driver, a 50-year-old man from Calgary, was pronounced dead at the scene, said Sgt. Patricia Neely.
“The car broke out in flames shortly after the collision, burning the car,” she said.
The driver of the semi was not injured."

"Police are investigating after an SUV rolled into a ditch north of Toronto Saturday night, killing its driver.

Peel Regional Police were called to the single-motor vehicle crash in King Township at 8:50 p.m. where they found the SUV resting in the south-bound ditch of the road.
The motorist was pronounced dead at the scene after his grey-coloured vehicle "rolled over and over" again on Concession Road 11 south of Sideroad 15, Insp. Gary Minor told CTV Toronto.
Minor said from the debris and tire marks, investigators believe the driver had somehow lost control of the vehicle but "what made the operator loose control is of interest to us."
Police said the driver had somehow been ejected from the SUV.

Cop chase ends with head-on crash in Ottawa.

"OTTAWA  - A police pursuit in the city's south end Sunday night ended in a horrific head-on crash that has left three people in hospital and caused morning rush-hour chaos.

Emergency crews were called to the crash site on Hunt Club Rd. at around 11 p.m.

At the scene, a demolished green Lexus rests on the south lawn of Hunt Club. Fire crews had to cut off the top of the car to extricate the two occupants: the male driver and a female passenger. It took about 30 minutes to free them.

The two rescued from the car are believed to be a couple.

Across the road, a blue Mitsubishi sits on the median with a heavily damaged front passenger side.

A police cruiser is also resting on the median, but it doesn't appear to have been damaged in the collision.

According to Jon Ansell of the Special Investigations Unit, police were pursuing the green Lexus.

"From what we gather at the moment, it was a brief pursuit — pursuing the green Lexus," said Ansell. "He was (travelling) westbound, mounted the curb and struck that Mitsubishi head-on."

The man driving the Lexus is under arrest.

Cops are still waiting to speak with the female passenger of the Lexus and the woman in the Mitsubishi. Both have serious injuries and are unable to be interviewed at the moment. However, their injuries are not life-threatening.

The investigation is ongoing.

"What we'd be looking for here is speed," said Ansell. "It looks as though (the man driving the Lexus) would have been going over the limit."

Man killed in Steeles Ave. crash.

"A 22-year-old man was killed Monday afternoon in a collision on Steeles Avenue, west of Highway 27, Toronto police say.
The crash in north Toronto happened just after 1 p.m. when an eastbound Saturn travelling at high speed swerved to avoid a pickup truck leaving a driveway west of Steinway Boulevard, police said.
The car missed the pickup but struck a commercial vehicle making a left turn into the same driveway.
The car was pinned under the cargo area of the commercial vehicle, a flatbed truck, and the driver died. No one else was in the car.
Steeles has been closed between Steinway and Signal Hill as police investigate.
Initial reports, based on information from paramedics, said the driver of the car was a woman."
