"A Russell County High School science teacher was killed Wednesday morning after a crash on U.S. 431 and Alabama Highway 169, Russell County Sheriff Heath Taylor confirmed.
It was a wreck involving a gray, four-door 2008 Suzuki Forenza and a 2005 International Tractor Trailer (18-wheel truck), according to Alabama Sgt. Steven Jarrett. The vehicle was pinned under the truck.
Russell County Coroner Arthur Sumbry Jr. said the wreck happened at 7:08 a.m. Wileatha Brown, 40, was driving the sedan, Jarrett said. The Tuskegee woman was not wearing her seatbelt, the sergeant confirmed. Sumbry said he pronounced her dead on the scene at 8:35 a.m.
Mike Green, superintendent of Russell County Schools, said Brown was in her first year as a science teacher at Russell County High School. "It hurt the school this morning," Green said of the wreck.
Green said students hadn't yet developed a bond with the new science teacher, but many faculty members knew her. Grief counselors were brought in Wednesday more for the faculty than students.
Green said Brown, a talented teacher with years of experience, was recruited to teach students at the high school. "She was very out going," he said.
The driver of the 18-wheel truck was uninjured, Sumbry said.
At 10 a.m., the southbound lanes of U.S. 431 were still closed and drivers were being sent on an alternative route. It appeared those lanes would open in the next 30 minutes.
The northbound lanes are open. The vehicle was removed out from under the 18-wheeler around 9:30 a.m. and was soon towed away. The 18-wheel truck was being taken away around 10 a.m.
Alabama State Troopers are investigating."

"Two men are dead after a morning crash in Augusta  County. 

According to state police, it happened around 7 a.m. along Woodrow Wilson Parkway near the ramp to Middlebrook Road.

A Chevrolet Equinox was traveling north on Route 262 when it crossed the centerline and struck a southbound GMC Sierra pickup truck.

The driver of the Equinox, James M. Bibb, 23, of Barboursville, died at the scene as did the driver of the Sierra, John D. Seale Jr., 56, of Millboro.

The highway was closed for a few hours while authorities investigated the scene and the crash was cleaned up."

Dump truck jumps median, crushes two cars on I-635.

"DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) - Both directions of the LBJ Freeway were shut down early Tuesday afternoon due to a dump truck crash between Webb Chapel Road and Marsh Lane. The incident happened at about 10:30 a.m. when the truck appeared to have jumped over the center concrete median.
Chopper 11 was live over the scene and spotted at least two other vehicles involved in the crash, one on each side of the highway. Both of those cars were pinned underneath each end of the dump truck.
According to Jason Evans with Dallas Fire-Rescue, there has been one confirmed death as a result of this incident. Another individual had to be transported away from the scene after being extricated from their car, but did not have life threatening injuries. Authorities have not yet said what may have caused the dump truck to jump over the median and into oncoming traffic.
The area where the crash took place is part of the LBJ Express Project, where road construction has already been impacting the regular flow of traffic heading east and west through north Dallas."

Teen charged with DUI after younger brother killed in crash.

An 18-year-old charged with felony DUI following a crash that killed his brother is out on bond.
Bond was set for Cameron Stringfellow Friday at $100,000 and he was released on his own recognizance.
The South Carolina Highway Patrol says a BMW being driven by Stringfellow struck a parked car on Shallow Brook Drive around 2:00 Friday morning.
"After hearing the screams for help we both went outside and realized it was teenagers in a car accident," said Dru Frederick.

Frederick had already called 911 and quickly thought of another way to help.

"I ran to my neighbor who is a physician to see if he could come over and help," said Frederick.
After hitting the parked car the BMW ran off the right side of the road and struck several trees. 
There were three teenagers in the car.
The Highway Patrol says all three were wearing their seatbelts and transported to Palmetto Richland Memorial. 
The 16-year-old passenger, John Corey Stringfellow, who was in the backseat of the car, was pronounced dead at the hospital.
The Highway Patrol says Cameron Stringfellow, the driver of the BMW, was charged with felony DUI.  Wesley Thompson, who was also in the car, was taken to Palmetto Health Richland where he was listed in fair condition.
Cameron Stringfellow is the older brother of the victim, and expected to graduate from Spring Valley next week.
Shallow Brook Road is in the Wildewood subdivision in northeast Richland County.
"To have something like this to anyone's child is very, very tough and our hearts and prayers are with the family," said Frederick."

Train hits bus in Evans City; one dead, 10 injured.

A rural Butler County railroad crossing where a freight train carrying asphalt collided Friday with a paratransit bus in heavy fog -- killing one person and injuring 10 others -- lacked warning lights and swinging gate arms to halt traffic.

For unknown reasons the bus ended up with its passengers -- elderly and disabled adults -- atop the tracks at Maple Avenue in Evans City around 8:10 a.m., when the 31-car train slammed into its driver's side, knocking the vehicle askew and totaling it.

Two critically injured passengers were flown by medical helicopter to Pittsburgh-area hospitals. One of them, 91-year-old Claudette Miller of Callery, died at Allegheny General Hospital at 1:02 p.m., according to the Allegheny County medical examiner's office.

The other remained in critical condition, and Evans City police Chief Joseph McCombs said the passenger might not survive.

Everyone else on the bus, including the driver -- identified by Chief McCombs as Frank Schaffner, 59, of Butler -- was taken by ambulance to hospitals in Allegheny and Butler counties. Hospital officials said their injuries were not life-threatening.

Conflicting accounts emerged about whether the driver was stopped or in the process of crossing the tracks when the crash occurred. Also unclear was the role the fog played.

"For some unknown reason, it stopped directly in the crossing," Chief McCombs said of the bus. Police said the train's engineer told them he sounded the horn "numerous times."

Chief McCombs said the bus, which was going east toward South Washington Street, entered the crossing and did not move as the Allegheny Valley Railroad train -- composed of two locomotives and 29 cars -- was approaching.

The train was believed to be moving around 25 mph -- the speed limit -- according to information provided to federal inspectors by the engineer and conductor.

The engineer saw the bus, sounded the horn several times and applied the brakes before the crash, which Chief McCombs described as "pretty chaotic" with "pretty severe impact."

Michael Robb, executive director of the Alliance for Nonprofit Resources Inc., which oversees the program under whose auspices the passengers were being transported, relayed a different version of events.

"I don't believe the bus stopped on the train tracks at all. He stopped prior to the tracks as he's required and as he was crossing the tracks he was hit," Mr. Robb said.

"It really is at the driver's discernment whether a train was coming. I do not know if the train blew the whistle or not. All I know is that our driver was conscious enough to give his report to local authorities that he stopped. As he was crossing he was struck by the train."

Mr. Robb said he had not spoken to the driver. He expressed sympathy to the victims and said transportation services will continue.

The crash happened at the intersection of Lawrenceville Highway (Hwy 29) and Indian Trail Road. Southbound traffic on Lawrenceville Highway was blocked while authorities investigated.

"MARINETTE - Marinette County authorities are looking for more information about a weekend crash in which a victim was later found dead at a home.
A damaged SUV sits empty inside the Marinette County Sheriff's Department, and a few days ago, that's exactly the way deputies found it.
"Our officer got there, there was no one around the vehicle," explained Marinette County Sheriff Jerry Sauve.
Sheriff's officials say they were called to a ditch along County W, just west of Crivitz, around 5:40 a.m. Saturday. A vehicle was found rolled over, but no people were in the area.
Officers say their investigation led them to the town of Stephenson home of the registered owner. The first time they stopped there, no one answered the door.
They returned around noon and met with the vehicle's owner. He told officers his roommate was also in the vehicle when it crashed the previous night.
When officers asked to speak with this man, the vehicle owner took them to an upstairs bedroom, where the roommate was found unconscious and presumed dead. The county coroner was then called. He pronounced the victim dead at the scene.
"We had an autopsy done on the victim Monday morning and it's been determined that he died of internal injuries sustained in the crash," Sauve said.
The dead man has been identified as 52-year-old Steven J. Hirth. Investigators believe alcohol was a factor in the crash.
Officials say there are still a lot of unanswered questions, but they ultimately feel the outcome could have been different.
"It's not uncommon for us to get people who crash their car and take off on us because they've been drinking or just want to avoid law enforcement," Sauve explained. "In this case, had they stayed at the scene and received proper medical attention, there's a good chance that perhaps he could have survived."
Emergency Room doctors agree.
"It's very important after a serious accident that you be evaluated, especially if you have alcohol in your system, because that can cloud some of the symptoms of serious injuries," explained Dr. Michael DeFrank with St. Mary's Hospital.
Because of the on-going investigation, authorities are not releasing the name of the vehicle's registered owner."

Long-term City Worker Hit, Killed When Speeding Car Crashes & Flips At City Hall.

"BALTIMORE (WJZ)—Chaos outside City Hall. An out-of control driver flips his car while trying to evade police, killing a city worker. A community is mourning that longtime activist.
Meghan McCorkell has more on this tragedy.
That car landed right in the front of City Hall.
Witnesses tackled the driver to the ground and held him there until police came.
More than 100 mph. That’s how fast police say this Acura was flying down the JFX.
“Next thing I heard was a crash and went running,” a witness said.
A state trooper spotted it and followed as the driver got off the highway and ran two red lights.
“Let me assure you there was no pursuit at that point in time,” said Sgt. Marc Black with Maryland State Police.

The car hit a city worker and then flipped in the air.
The driver jumped out and tried to run– but witnesses stopped him.
“I grabbed the guy by his dreadlocks, pulled him down to the ground, stepped on his neck and said don’t move,” said Cesar Lithgow.
Police captured the suspect.
City worker Matthew Hersl, 45, was rushed to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
According to records, Hersl had worked here in the city finance department for the past 28 years.
“I’m extremely saddened by the news, and again my prayers, and I hope the prayers of our city, are with his family,” said Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake.
“To have a tragedy like this is just heartbreaking,” said City Council President Jack Young.
Hersl— a big Orioles fan— was an integral part of his Little Italy neighborhood.
“He always put the community first, always wanted to help make it a better place for everybody,” said neighbor Jim Palermo.
He served on several community organizations and helped run Citizens on Patrol.
“It’s sick. I lost my right arm. I lost my right arm in this community. He did everything, just a naturally down-to-Earth generally good guy,” said Mary Ann Campanella, victim’s friend.
A memorial sits outside Hersl’s front door, as neighbors honor a man who gave back so much.
Some community members in Little Italy say they plan to hold a special memorial service for Hersl.
The suspect was treated for minor injuries.
Police have not yet identified him."

"Deputies believe that weather conditions may have played a role in a fatal accident in Fayette County on Friday.
According to the Fayette County Sheriff’s Office, the crash occurred shortly before 4 p.m. on State Route 753 near Rock Mills-Good Hope Road in Wayne Township.
Deputies said that the female driver, Phyllis L. Rea, 63, of Greenfield, was traveling north in a tan Dodge caravan when she slid off the roadway, went left of center, and into a ditch. The vehicle continued through the ditch and struck a fence and two trees.
Rea’s seat was believed to have broken during impact. Deputies said she was not wearing a seat belt.
The crash remains under investigation."

"BOYLE COUNTY, Ky. (WKYT) - A close call for some patients at a Danville doctor's office after a truck slammed into a crowded waiting room.
It happened around 12:30 p.m. Tuesday afternoon at the Ephraim McDowell Heart and Vascular Institute on Ben Ali Drive.
A firefighter with the Danville fire department tells us A woman driving the truck crashed into a column in the front of the building, then put the pick-up in reverse and slammed into the waiting room.
Danville police identify the driver as 73-year-old Thelma Richardson of Junction City.
The fire department says she was taken to the hospital to be treated for non-life threatening injuries.
Officials with Ephraim McDowell say it might have been a good thing she hit the front of the building first because it got people away from the waiting room. "Well, yeah, it got everybody out of the way. If there hadn't been some means of distracting the people, then, yeah, there could have been some people seriously Hurt," said Keith Bridges with Ephraim McDowell Health
Two people inside the waiting room were treated for scratches and bruises.
The building was determined to be structurally safe and remains open for business.
Maintenance crews with Ephraim McDowell have already began repairing the damage."

Princeton Rabbi Dead, 2 Seriously Injured in Crash Outside of Riverside Elementary School.

"A 74-year-old Princeton Rabbi was killed and two people seriously injured after a BMW careened down Riverside Drive on Thursday morning without braking, crossed to the other side of the road and struck two parked cars.
Rabbi James Diamond of Princeton, who was getting into a parked Toyota Prius at the time of the crash, was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident, which occurred around 9:40 a.m.
Diamond is the former director of Princeton University's Center of Jewish Life, and moved to Princeton from St. Louis. According to a 1995 article posted on the Princeton University website, he is married with three children.
The driver of the BMW, Eric Maltz, 20, of Princeton, was taken to Capital Health Regional Medical Center. Rabbi Robert Freedman, 63, of Princeton, who was in the Prius was also taken to the trauma center. Both of their conditions are classified as serious but not life-threatening, according to Princeton Police.
Freedman is a former cantor at the Jewish Center of Princeton. Both Freedman and Diamond were reportedly leaving a weekly Talmud study group when the accident occurred.
Maltz was driving a 2003 green BMW sedan was driving south down Riverside (away from Route 27) when it crossed into the southbound lane and struck a parked Toyota Camry, pushing it into a parked Toyota Prius parked behind it, police said.
The BMW pushed both cars about 500 feet, and the Prius ended up even further away, across the street and onto private property.
"There are two obvious things," Princeton Police Capt. Sutter said at the scene Thursday morning. "The BMW was traveling at a high rate of speed and didn't appear to attempt to brake."
There was no immediate indication that Maltz suffered any type of medical condition that may have led to the crash, Police Sgt. Mike Cifelli said.
The speed limit on the street, which is in a school zone, is 25 mph.
The crash remains under investigation by Princeton Police, with the assistance of the Mercer County Prosecutor's Office. "

Boyle County Sheriff’s Office responded to the scene to discover the woman had lost control of the car while going around a curve.

Police said the wet highway played a factor in the accident.

Woman survives horrific crash in Danville.

"A Danville woman narrowly escaped serious injury Tuesday afternoon when a tractor-trailer rig loaded with toilet paper and paper towels overturned on top of her SUV as she was preparing to stop for a red light at the intersection of the Danville bypass and Lebanon Road.

“I can’t believe my head is not crushed,” Wendy Howard, 39, said at the scene as she looked at her GMC Envoy with the front of its cab caved in by the trailer, which was carrying a payload of about 45,000 pounds.

The crash occurred about 3 p.m., when the big rig, driven by Adolfo Penny of Clinton, Md., was southbound on the bypass and ran through the red light at Lebanon Road, witnesses told Danville police.

The big truck, owned by Crete Carrier Corp., collided with a Chevy pickup truck driven by Clifton Grubbs Jr. of Danville, who was traveling east through the intersection on Lebanon Road, and then careened into the northbound lanes. The tractor-trailer sideswiped a Ford pickup truck driven by Sabe Ruggles, 18, of Danville before the weight of the load shifted, causing the trailer to overturn on top of Howard’s vehicle, police said.

Grubbs was transported from the scene by ambulance to Ephraim McDowell Regional Medical Center for treatment of possible back and neck injuries, police said. No other injuries were reported.

The cab of the big truck ran through a guardrail on the right side of the northbound lanes before turning over on its side, leaving the trailer sprawled across three lanes of traffic. The intersection was finally cleared about 11 p.m., eight hours after the crash occurred, police said.

Because the trailer was damaged in the crash, it had to be partially unloaded before it could be brought upright, Danville Police Chief Tony Gray said.

The paper products, which had just been picked up at Wausau in Harrodsburg, were off-loaded onto pallets by hand and then reloaded on to another trailer using a forklift, Danville police Capt. James Monroe said.

Roberts Towing of Lexington brought two oversized wreckers to the scene in order to winch the big rig back on its wheels, Gray said. A tanker truck also was deployed to drain the diesel fuel from the overturned truck before it was set right, Monroe said.

Howard said she had been running errands and was on her way to pick up her daughter at Woodlawn Elementary School when the big truck flashed across her path as she was easing up to the stop light.

“It all happened so fast. The trailer just came in on me,” she said.

The top of the trailer smashed in the cab of Howard’s SUV, but she sustained no injuries and was able to unbuckle her seat belt and climb out through a back door, she said.

Several people at the scene speculated what might have happened to Howard if she had traveled another foot or two before the trailer toppled over on to her vehicle.

“It’s one of those things where you just go ‘Wow!’” said Danville Fire Chief Woody Ball. “Her guardian angel was flying with her, I suppose.”"

Dump Truck Knocks Power Out, Closes Intersection.

"HARRISONBURG - The intersection of Vine Street and Old Furnace Road is closed due to an accident that happened around 8 a.m. Wednesday.
The driver of a dump truck was traveling with the bed of the truck in a raised position. As he drove through the intersection the bed of the truck hit the traffic signals and overhead utilities.
Multiple crews are working to repair the lines. However, this intersection will be closed for several hours while the repairs are being made.
The driver of the dump truck, Dorman Mongold, 64, of Fulks Run, is charged with reckless driving, failure to secure load and defective equipment.
Three other cars were damaged when the overhead utilities and traffic signals were struck and fell down.
One person was taken to RMH as a precautionary measure."

Bus driver charged in wreck that hurt 3.

"JOLIVUE — Virginia State Police have charged an Augusta County school bus driver following an accident this morning on U.S. 11 just south of Staunton.
The crash injured the bus driver, 61-year-Bruce K. Pugh, of Staunton, along with two students. All of the injuries were minor, police said.
The bus was headed southbound on U.S. 11 shortly before 7:30 a.m. before turning onto a wide right shoulder for a turnaround, police said. As the bus pulled across the southbound lanes, it was struck by a 1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee driven by Ann S. Schooley, 53, of Staunton. The Jeep struck the front of the bus near the driver's side. Schooley was not injured, police said.
Chuck Bishop, superintendent of the Augusta County Public Schools, said Bus 129 was carrying 36 students from Beverley Manor Elementary School and Beverley Manor Middle School.
A second bus was brought to the scene of the accident and the students were transferred to that bus and taken to school.
The wreck took place just north of Victory Baptist Church.
Police said both drivers were wearing seatbelts.
Pugh is charged with failure to yield the right-of-way.

UPDATE: 8:36 a.m.

JOLIVUE — Two students and a bus driver were taken to Augusta Health after their school bus wrecked on U.S. 11 south of Staunton earlier this morning
The bus wrecked just north of Victory Baptist Church, said Superintendent Chuck Bishop. Bus 129 was carrying 36 Beverley Manor Elementary and Middle school students.
Bishop said none of the people taken to the hospital were seriously injured.
A Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo driven by a woman hit the bus. No further details about the driver or the circumstances surrounding the wreck are available yet."
