By Kristina Davis and Ashly McGlone

" — A BMW crashed over the edge of a third-story parking structure at Fashion Valley, injuring a passenger when it landed on its roof onto two parked cars Saturday.
The crash occurred about 1:15 p.m. near Cheesecake Factory and Nordstrom.
Police Officer Frank Cali said the driver of a silver BMW X5 was trying to back out of the space when another driver was passing by. The man pulled back into the space to let the car pass. On a second attempt to exit the space, another driver approached and honked the horn. When pulling back into the space, the man accidentally hit the accelerator instead of the brake, causing the SUV to plunge over the side of the structure, police said.
The SUV teetered for a bit before it flipped, landing on its roof on the front end of a Kia Sorrento and the back end of a Mercedes Benz sedan, shattering the glass on both vehicles.
The driver, who appeared to be in his 70s, was able to get out of the BMW on his own, police and witnesses said. His girlfriend, who was a passenger, was trapped in the wreckage. Witnesses did not want to further injure her and waited for paramedics to extricate her, said Chad Robley, who saw the crash and stopped to help.
She was taken to a hospital with minor injuries, said San Diego police accident investigator Mike Gottfried. The driver did not require hospitalization. No one on the ground was hurt.
The Kia and the Mercedes were parked illegally, police said.
One ground-level entrance to the parking garage was closed by mall officials, but all three levels of the parking garage remained open during the investigation."

By Pasadena StarNews

"EL MONTE - All lanes of the westbound 10 Freeway were reopened late Tuesday morning at Peck Road, the site of an earlier fatal accident, according to the California Highway Patrol.
Three of the four lanes were closed for more than six hours Tuesday after a minivan driver was killed and two road construction workers were injured. The accident occured at 4:14 a.m. Tuesday, said the CHP.
Traffic lanes were reopened by around 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, according to the CHP, but not before creating a major traffic slowdown from El Monte to West Covina that may have added more than an hour to commute time for motorists driving to Los Angeles.
CHP Officer Ed Jacobs says a Ford Aerostar rear-ended a road work truck as the crew picked up traffic cones on westbound 10.

Jacobs says the minivan's driver died. Two road workers were taken to the hospital with minor to moderate injuries.

Jacobs says he can't confirm TV reports that a dog in the minivan also was killed.

The crash follows a Sunday accident that killed two road workers on Interstate 405 in Torrance. Authorities say two suspected drunken drivers collided, and one car slammed into repaving equipment."

2 Hurt After SUV Crashes Into Apartment Building.

Date: 06/09/2012
Time: Around 11:30 A.M.
Location: San Diego, California
Vehicle(s) Involved: Kia Spectra

By 10News

"Two people were injured and two others were displaced on Saturday after a vehicle crashed into a North Park apartment building, according to San Diego police and fire officials.
The incident occurred at about 11:26 a.m. at a building in the Canyonwood Apartments in the 1800 block of Upas Street.
The incident occurred at about 11:26 a.m. at a building in the Canyonwood Apartments in the 1800 block of Upas Street.
A man in his 70s was driving a Kia SUV on Upas Street when the SUV accidentally went through a wood fence. The SUV went down a 50-foot embankment before it rolled over and crashed into the apartment building.
"I thought that huge earthquake had happened and then I went into my living room... I went into my bedroom and saw a car up against the window," said neighbor Jim Chatham.
A witness said he was driving behind the SUV before the crash occurred. He said it was going slowly before it came to a stop and then flew off the hill.
"They were going really slow," said witness Rich Rogalski. "I happened to notice a handicap sticker on their license plate." He added, "I'm sitting here making a right-hand turn on this driveway and they flew... They sped up and flew right off this street." It is unclear what exactly caused the crash. The driver and his female passenger – who was in her 60s – were extricated from the wreckage and were both taken to a local hospital. The passenger suffered back pain, and the driver suffered a major head injury and a severe injury to his hand. Eight adults were initially evacuated from 12 of the building's units and a building engineer had been called in, according to a San Diego Fire-Rescue Department dispatcher. Most of the residents were allowed to return to their homes, however two remained displaced, the dispatcher said. Two units were damaged and deemed uninhabitable until further inspection. Two others had their gas turned off, Battrick said. It took rescue crews several hours to remove the SUV. They said that process is sometimes risky. "Since there is structural compromise into the building, removing that vehicle might be the only thing that's actually securing that," said San Diego Fire-Rescue Department Capt. Eugene Scott. The San Diego police Traffic Division is investigating the crash."
