"Two people were killed, including an Indiana Toll Road maintenance worker, after a crash this morning on I-90 in LaPorte County, Ind., officials said.
In addition to the fatal injuries, another toll road worker
was injured in the crash that happened at about 11:30 a.m. at mile
marker 39.8 just east of the Michigan City exit, according to Indiana
State Police officials.
Police dispatchers had received a call about a speeding, erratic driver traveling west on the roadway and was in the process of dispatching the information to police when the same vehicle, a red 2005 Hyundai Santa Fe, struck the rear of a maintenance pickup truck, officials said.
The pickup truck was parked on the inner shoulder of the westbound lanes with its lights and a lit arrow board activated on the truck, police said. There was a sign behind the pickup warning drivers of workers up ahead, police said.
Daniel J. Miller, 52, of LaPorte who had just been a passenger in the truck, had stepped out and walked behind the truck to retrieve trimming equipment from the truck bed when the Hyundai struck him and the rear of the pickup, according to police.
Miller was pronounced dead by the LaPorte County Coroner. He had worked for the toll road for 17 years, officials said.
Paul A. Kimbrugh, 78 of Coldwater, Mich. and Cape Coral, Fla. who was the driver of the Hyundai was pronounced dead after being airlifted to South Bend Memorial Hospital.
The second maintenance worker who was in the pickup was taken to Saint Anthony's Hospital in Michigan City with non-life-threatening injuries, police said.
The westbound lanes of the toll road were closed for about two hours."

18-Wheeler Crash Closes Dallas Tollway For Hours.
Date: 02/23/2012
Time: Around 9:30 A.M.
Location: Dallas, Texas
Vehicle(s) Involved: Semi truck, Chevy Cruze, unknown vehicle
By CBSDFW
"DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) – Just before 4:30 p.m. all northbound lanes of the Dallas North Tollway, from Interstate-635 to Spring Valley Road were finally re-opened after a serious morning accident involving an 18-wheeler and two vehicles.
From about 9:45 a.m. until evening rush hour, northbound traffic was being diverted onto eastbound Interstate-635. The 18-wheeler was removed from the roadway just before 4 p.m.
As of 3:44 p.m. all southbound lanes of the Tollway, at I-635 , were open.
As Chopper 11 flew over the scene, minutes after the morning accident, at least one car could be seen underneath the trailer portion of the overturned semi. The truck was carrying a 30,000 pound load of cardboard.
Officials with the North Texas Tollway Authority (NTTA) said the only major damage was to a light pole in the center median. The light is functioning, but will have to be replaced.
Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) spokesman Lonnie Haschel said the crash happened as the semi was traveling the westbound I-635 ramp onto the northbound Dallas Tollway.
Haschel said the driver of the 18-wheeler was traveling too fast, crossed all three lanes of Tollway traffic, pushed an SUV through the concrete barrier and into southbound traffic, then fell over and landed on top of another car.
CBS 11 News has confirmed that 49-year-old Greg Meece, of Sugarland, was injured and taken to Parkland Hospital. Meece was the driver of the car that was trapped beneath the 18-wheeler. Thursday afternoon he was in serious condition in the ICU.
The driver of the SUV was also taken to an area hospital. That person’s condition isn’t known.
The driver of the semi was not injured, but Haschel said that individual will be charged with “failure to control speed.”
Some alternatives for east/west travelers might be – Beltline Road, Forest Lane, Royal Lane or Walnut Hill Lane. Alternatives for north/south travelers might be – Interstate-35, Lemmon Avenue (which turns into Marsh Lane), U.S. Highway 75 or Greenville Avenue."

Sleepy Teens can be Dangerous Drivers.
By WHSV3
"Seven to nine hours - that's the recommended amount of sleep every teen is supposed to get. But a new study finds, more than one in five teens gets less.
"Being sleep deprived and driving is probably worse than driving drunk," guessed UVa graduate student Eric Magnuson. Well, maybe not worse, but it's certainly a concern among young drivers like Magnuson, and the people who teach them.
Richard Wharam has been helping Albemarle County students learn to drive for more than 16 years. He says exhausted drivers are dangerous.
"When we fall asleep for two, three seconds at 60 miles an hour you're traveling over a football field," Wharam said.
What happens during those couple of seconds can be deadly. Wharam says 53 percent of teen driving fatalities happen when a driver veers off of the road, and overcorrects.
he demostrates safe offroad recovery.
A new study finds more than 20 percent of young people say they don't get enough sleep, study results that don't surprise Magnuson. He says now more than ever, it's easier to lose track of time and stay up too late.
"I think with rises of things like the computer and the internet its easier to stay up and do things that are entertaining," Magnuson said..
But Wharam says, rather than staying up, teens should be staying alert.
"We need to be aware of the fact that today's traffic congestion is so bad you need to be wide awake and alert and searching and evaluating, predicting the behavior of other drivers you can't be half asleep doing that stuff," Wharam said.
The Canadian Medical Association Journal recently surveyed more than 4,000 teens. More than 800 of them said they didn't get enough sleep. The study linked sleep disturbance to a higher risk of heart disease later in life."

Two Dead, Two Injured in Staten Island Crash.
Date: 08/27/2012
Time: Around 7:00 P.M.
Location: Staten Island, New York City, New York
Vehicle(s) Involved: Ambulance, BMW X3
By Amy Zimmer, DNAinfo News Editor
"STATEN ISLAND — A BMW collided with an ambulance on Hylan Boulevard and Seacrest Avenue Monday evening, killing both drivers and injuring two others, officials said.
The unidentified driver of the car was pronounced dead at the scene in the accident, which occurred just before 7:10 p.m. He drove across the median, struck the ambulance and was thrown from his vehicle, police officials said.
David Restuccio, 58, a paramedic for a privately-operated ambulance for Staten Island University Hospital, was taken to the hospital in critical condition after suffering cardiac arrest.
He later died there, hospital spokeswoman Arleen Ryback confirmed.
Restuccio was a lieutenant for FDNY EMS for nearly 20 years before retiring and working as a paramedic for a private company, sources said.
He appears to have been a first responder on Sept. 11, 2001, and was interviewed by Brian Williams on the phone on the day of the attacks.
The other victims, both in stable condition but under evaluation, included another ambulance worker along with a patient being transported from Staten Island University's north side to its south side, Ryback said.
NYPD officials said the incident was under investigation."

Woman Rushed to Hospital after Cab in Crash Spins onto Sidewalk.
Date: 07/23/2012
Time: Around 7:00 P.M.
Location: Yorkville, Manhattan, New York City, New York
Vehicle(s) Involved: Ford Escape, Ford Crown Victoria
By Jill Colvin, Amy Zimmer
"YORKVILLE — A 28-year-old woman was rushed to the hospital with head trauma after being struck by a taxi that spun onto the sidewalk at the southeast corner of Second Avenue and East 79th Street Monday night, police and witnesses said.
The SUV taxi that hit the woman had first been involved in a crash with a Crown Victoria cab before spinning out of control, witnesses said.
The unidentified woman was taken to New York-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center, FDNY officials said. She was stable early Tuesday, an NYPD spokesman said.
Delti Braha, 29, doorman at the Continental Palace, near the intersection, ran outside to help the woman just after hearing the loud boom about 7 p.m.
"She was face down, bleeding," said Braha, who was told by others on the block that she had been standing on the street when the cabs got into the accident.
"[The SUV] slammed into her and she was on the floor," he said. "It's sad."
An NYPD spokesman said there was no criminality was suspected "at this time," and that both drivers remained at the scene.
How the accident occurred was not immediately clear.
Police officers at the intersection said the SUV cab was making a left turn from Second Avenue onto East 79th Street. One witness said she screamed when she saw the Crown Vic because it was speeding eastward on East 79th Street just before the incident happened.
But the driver of the Crown Vic, who declined to give his name, claimed that the other cab passed a red light while going south on Second Avenue.
"He was running the red light, so he hit the [pedestrian]," the Crown Vic driver, who appeared unharmed, claimed. "I'm really sorry for her friends, for her family, her children, whatever she has. It is stupid. All for $5. …I'm very sad for her. Honest, it's crazy."
Braha said it was not uncommon for cars to go fast at that intersection.
"Everybody speeds up," he said. "They're trying to catch the lights.""
